Therapy Chair's Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?

CBT is a therapeutic approach that focuses on the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It aims to identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviours to promote positive mental well-being.

How does CBT work?

CBT works by helping individuals become aware of their negative thought patterns, understand how these thoughts influence their emotions and behaviours, and develop healthier ways of thinking and responding.

What conditions can CBT treat?

CBT is effective for a wide range of mental health conditions, including anxiety disorders, depression, phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and more.

Is CBT suitable for everyone?

CBT is a versatile and evidence-based approach that can be effective for many individuals. However, its suitability may vary, and a qualified therapist will assess whether CBT is the right fit based on individual needs.

How long does CBT treatment typically last?

The duration of CBT varies based on the individual and the nature of the issues being addressed. It can range from a few sessions for specific issues to more extended treatment for complex concerns.

Is CBT only about talking, or are there practical exercises involved?

CBT often includes practical exercises and homework assignments between sessions. These exercises help clients practice and integrate new coping skills into their daily lives.

How confidential is CBT?

Confidentiality is a crucial aspect of therapy. Therapists adhere to strict ethical guidelines to ensure client privacy and confidentiality. However, there are legal and ethical exceptions, such as situations involving harm to oneself or others.

How do I choose a CBT therapist?

When selecting a CBT therapist, consider their qualifications, experience, and specialization in treating specific conditions. It's essential to feel comfortable with your therapist, so you may want to schedule an initial consultation to assess the fit.

Is CBT a standalone treatment, or can it be combined with other therapies or medications?

CBT can be used as a standalone treatment, but it can also be integrated with other therapeutic approaches or medications, depending on the individual's needs. Collaborative care is often beneficial for comprehensive mental health support.

What qualifications do you have?

Alongside a BA hons in Psychology and Counselling, I also have a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling Skills, and a Level 4 Certificate in working with Children and Young People.
